MBITI ya MIRIMA
šLore
In 1892, the first documented expedition of Mt. Kirimara ended abruptly just 800m off itās highest peak. The team of explorers had left their local porters behind when they refused to go past a certain invisible boundary. Barely seven years later, another European led expedition up the mountain were shy 849m from the peak. This apparent failure was blamed on the unforgiving weather conditions and fatigue. It was a badly kept secret amongst the local villagers what the real reason was. Mbiti ya Mirima hunted down anyone that attempted to reach the highest peaks. It was a foregone conclusion that the Mountain was to be worshipped, not explored. Armed with 8 inch claws, Mbiti could reach frightening speeds even on slippery permafrost. And just when you thought there was a gorge between you and him, he could glide to the next peak just as easily on its webbed wings, using its tail as a rudder. Crossing its āline in the frozen sandā meant a swift death. Using its anole- like scales, Mbiti ya Mirima could semi-camouflage in deep slumber, only to wake up at the scent of an intruder. To warn people of an impending attack, Mbiti could alter its scales orientation to shine. It had an exposed skull that only added to its foreboding look. An old witch doctor and seer of ancestors claimed to know what Mbiti was guarding āup thereā. She was dismissed for peddling falsehoods about giant eggs and large dragon remains. The oldest clan members dismissed her for no one had ever climbed up the mountain and come back. āIt must be protecting the gods..ā said a leader of the Njuri Ncheke. This was a more plausible explanation. Life in the quite villages continued. šSTATS
